10th April 2016: Köln CC won by 58 runs, by Adithya Sridhar

The first game of the 2016 season started off with Hengelo 1 winning the toss. The Hengelo captain for the game, Rahim Azhar, chose to field first taking into account the slightly wet outfield. This turned out to be a sensible decision as the visitors started off their batting slowly. The first wicket went to Rahim in the 7th over, with just 26 runs on the board for the visitors. Hengelo piled on the pressure through some economical bowling which led to Febin dismissing the second opener in the 13th over. With a score of 48/2 after 14 overs, the home team was in a strong position. However, as the sun began shining and the ball started slowing down on the new matting, the 3rd wicket partnership of 96 stabilised the batting for Köln CC. Sumeet, batting at no. 3 for the away team, played a wonderful knock for a hundred (113 to be precise). This was followed by a quick fire 34 (off 22 balls) from Nilay. Sloppy fielding and poor bowling (after 20 overs) saw the team from Köln post a total of 261/5 after 40 overs. Febin, particularly in his first spell (4 overs, 7-1) and debutant Edoardo were the pick of the bowlers for Hengelo 1.

The home team started their chase with Abhishek and Erik facing good out swingers from Irfan and Sumeet. The first wicket of Hengelo 1 fell in the 6th over for a score of 28 and the second wicket fell at 69 in the 17th over, with Erik being dismissed for 30 runs. At the half way point, Hengelo 1 were in a similar position to the visitors (100 for 2). With a T20-like siutaution on their hands, the 3rd wicket partnership of Adithya and Pramod stabilised the innings and sped up the scoring. They managed to score 67 in 10 overs when Adithya was caught at point for 62 (off 64 balls). With a score of 150/2 around the 30 over mark and pressure to score quick runs, the result was a typical Hengelo collapse with the home team being bowled out for 203 in the 40th over. Sumeet continued his excellent performance from earlier in the day and picked up 3 wickets and, along with Anirudh, was the pick of the bowlers for Köln CC. Special word of thanks goes to Aditya N and Anirudh for being sportive and helping out the visitors who were two men short. Despite the loss for Hengelo 1, both the home and the visiting players enjoyed a good game of cricket with sunny weather and plenty of positives for the upcoming season.
